For your convenience, we explain some of the common terms used in requesting special services from us. For instructions on how to specify any of these special services, see the section indicating special services section below.

Original Image
Here is the original image we'll use in the examples that follow, as shot.

Full Frame

When the image dimensions and the paper dimensions are different, as they often are, you may wish to have the full image printed. This is "full frame" printing. As shown below, however, any difference in the dimensions will be blank.

Full Bleed

When the image dimensions and the paper dimensions are different, you may instead wish to fill the paper fully with image, and lose any difference in dimension off the edges. This is known as "full bleed" printing. You will need to indicate where you want the bleed to occur unless you want it merely centered. (Instructions for indicating bleed locations are given below.) In the sample shown below, the grayed-out areas overlap the edges of the paper, and will be lost.

Cropping

You may want to specify only a portion of the image to be used in the finished print, and eliminate any extraneous elements of the subject, effectively "zooming-in" on a portion of the image. This is called "cropping," since we'll crop out anything outside the area you designate. (Instructions for specifying the cropped area are given below.) In the sample below, all of the grayed-out areas of the image will be lost.

Dodging and Burning (Lightening and Darkening)

If you want specific areas of your image lightened or darkend, we can do that for you. This is known as "dodging" or "burning," depending on whether we're lightening or darkening an area. Since Ilfochrome is a reversal process, these terms can get confusing for you, and for us. To ensure that you get the result you want, specify "lighten" or "darken" using the instructions provided below. In the samples the follow, the first image is the original The next has had its lower portion lightened. The final sample has the upper area darkened. Note that these are extreme examples designed to demonstrate the effect.
